Heart to Heart: We Expose Our Kids to Everything — Except Love
The desk's cover: a cartoon family — the line so many of us draw. Animation still supplied to the desk by the editor-in-chief. Graphics: City Girls Decoded.

Black America — come sit down. Not to argue. To talk, one family to itself, because this is a heart to heart, and hearts don't come with comment sections. We need to talk about why we are hell-bent on keeping gay people off the screens our kids watch — and what our kids are watching INSTEAD.

WHAT WE'LL WATCH. Let's be honest about the lineup: we hand them phones with drill rap and body bags running down the timeline. We sit them in front of reality shows where grown folks throw glasses at each other. The algorithm feeds them fight videos, scam tutorials and half-dressed everything at nine years old. Our kids get a front-row seat to gun violence, financial chaos and grown dysfunction EVERY DAY — and the household keeps scrolling. But a cartoon with two moms? A character with two dads? NOW the line gets drawn. NOW it's not around my child. Baby — the child has already seen worse. WE exposed them to it.

WHAT THE GAY KID ACTUALLY DOES. Because the fear never came with a spreadsheet, here's one: per the U.S. Census Bureau, same-sex married-couple households earn a HIGHER median income than opposite-sex married couples — $123,500 vs $109,700 — and male same-sex couples hit $140,500 in 2024. Adults with a same-sex spouse hold bachelor's degrees at 53% vs 41% for opposite-sex couples — master's degrees at 26.2% vs 17.5% — and they are HALF as likely to lack a high school diploma (4.4% vs 8.2%). Read it again, slow: the kid you were scared FOR is statistically positioned to OUT-EARN and OUT-DEGREE the kid you weren't. The lifestyle we feared builds households. Our fear builds funerals.

WHAT WE EXPOSE THEM TO. Since 2020, firearms have been the #1 cause of death for American children and teens — every single year since. Black youth die by gunfire at SIX TIMES the rate of white youth; in 2022 we were 14% of the youth population and 48% of its gun deaths. And for the first time on record, the firearm SUICIDE rate for Black children passed white children's in 2022. More than half of youth gun deaths are tied to concentrated poverty. That's the daily lineup our kids consume — and we made peace with it. Meanwhile PEN America counted 10,000+ school book bans in a single school year — 29% of the banned titles feature LGBTQ+ people, and 64% of the banned PICTURE BOOKS are about gay or trans families. We banned the picture books and kept the body bags.

THE KICKED-OUT ONES. Now the part that should hurt: per The Trevor Project, 28% of LGBTQ youth have faced homelessness or housing instability — Black LGBTQ youth at 26% — and LGBTQ youth without stable housing attempt suicide at two to four times the rate of stably housed ones. In the last year, 41% of Black LGBTQ youth seriously considered suicide; 14% attempted. A gay kid watching television was never the danger. A gay kid with nowhere to sleep IS in danger — and the front door that locks behind them usually belongs to US.

THE HURT. So here it is straight, no chaser: we will fill a church for a funeral but empty a living room over a children's show. We will march when the system takes our kids and say nothing when WE put them out. And gay people are not doing better because America loves them — they're doing better because college, careers and dual incomes never checked who they love. The word was never represent, baby. The word was INVEST. Our kids are watching us spend our outrage everywhere EXCEPT the places that kill them.

MORGAN'S TAKE: "The gay character was never the threat. The gun was. The rent was. The door we put them out of was. Love your kids louder than your fear, Black America — because the data already told you what kills them, and it's not a TV show."

THE FINE PRINT. Every number here is sourced and none of it is alleged: U.S. Census Bureau ACS (2022, 2024) and NCFMR/Bowling Green State University for same-sex couple income and education ($123,500 vs $109,700 median household income; $140,500 for male same-sex couples in 2024; 53% vs 41% bachelor's; 26.2% vs 17.5% master's; 4.4% vs 8.2% without a diploma). JAMA and Johns Hopkins for firearms as the leading cause of U.S. child death since 2020. KFF for Black youth firearm deaths: 12.2 per 100,000 — six times white youth — and 48% of youth gun deaths at 14% of the youth population; the firearm-suicide crossover for Black children in 2022. JAMA Pediatrics for the poverty concentration link. PEN America (2023-24) for 10,000+ book bans, 29% featuring LGBTQ+ people, 64% of banned picture books. GLAAD's Where We Are on TV for the 8.6% broadcast share. The Trevor Project (2022-2024) for homelessness (28% LGBTQ youth, 26% Black LGBTQ youth), the suicide-ideation figure (41% of Black LGBTQ youth) and attempts (14%). Content note: this letter discusses youth suicide, homelessness and community neglect.

Glowgetters, this one's different: no teams tonight — just read it twice and call somebody you love. If you've got a gay nephew, a trans cousin, a daughter with a wife — you KNOW the door matters more than the show.

Morgan's verdict

"The fear of who our kids might see was never about them. It was about what we won't look at — the gun, the rent, the door. Look, baby. The data is holding eye contact."
