ARE THE WINANS MAGA? — The Desk Checked the Receipts: 2020, 2012, 2025

Glowgetters — the group chat has been passing around a question like it's a receipt: ARE THE WINANS MAGA? CeCe's name is in the fire right now over that Kennedy Center post, BeBe's 2012 RNC moment is back in rotation, and somebody always brings up 'the Trump ad.' The desk doesn't do vibes, baby — the desk does RECEIPTS. So we pulled all three moments, checked what's actually documented, and we're printing the WHOLE thing. Read it before you vote in the group chat.
RECEIPT NO. 1 — THE 2020 'TRUMP AD.' Per Politico, September 2020: Trump appointees abruptly took $300 MILLION out of the CDC's pocket to fund a Trump-ordered HHS ad campaign to 'defeat despair' about COVID — running right before the November 3, 2020 election. Celebrities sat for interviews with administration officials: CeCe Winans with U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams, Dennis Quaid with Dr. Fauci. The blowup was INSTANT. CeCe's answer, on Instagram, September 2020: 'I was asked a couple of weeks ago to do an interview with the surgeon general, Jerome Adams, about the coronavirus... This interview stresses how important it is for everyone to wear a mask... It is not political at all. We have lost so many lives to COVID-19. Let's all do everything we can so we won't lose any more. God bless you.' She told Religion News Service she was 'never paid for anything' — 'Absolutely not.' Her rep, Chaz Corzine: 'She volunteered her time participating in the PSA and was happy to do so because of her concerns about how Covid has and is impacting the African American community.' What happened next: per Politico, celebrities kept backing away, the campaign sputtered, and per CeCe herself, the PSA she filmed appeared to have been PULLED.
RECEIPT NO. 2 — THE 2012 RNC. August 30, 2012, Tampa: BeBe Winans sang 'America America' at the Republican National Convention, right before Mitt Romney accepted the nomination. UNPAID — he said so himself, to ESSENCE, days later: 'I didn't ask to be placed in this position. When they came to me... my message to them and to the world is that we are all Americans before we are a part of any political party.' And here's the part the group chat keeps SKIPPING: BeBe is a registered DEMOCRAT. He performed at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. He campaigned for President OBAMA. He's sung for President Bush — the DoD photo exists, the desk put it on the cover. And his reward for the RNC turn? The Democratic Convention in Charlotte pulled its invitation, and BeBe said he had no hard feelings. Both parties treated a gospel singer like a political prop, Glowgetters — that's the whole receipt.
RECEIPT NO. 3 — THE KENNEDY HONORS POST. December 2025: the 48th Kennedy Center Honors — the one where President Trump had stacked the board, made himself chairman, hosted the ceremony HIMSELF, and renamed the building 'The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.' Issa Rae, Rhiannon Giddens and the producers of Hamilton had all CANCELED over it. Debbie Winans — CeCe's baby sister — performed in the Gloria Gaynor tribute alongside Mike Farris, Jason Crabb, Chris Blue and Deniece Williams. And CeCe posted: 'The Kennedy Honors were awesome! Great job Robert Deaton! And my baby sister @debbie.winans was incredible!!! Praise God.' The internet did what the internet does: 'so she's MAGA.' Fans pushed back — 'being in the room doesn't mean you agree with everyone in it.' Critics held their ground — one comment: 'when the current administration is trying to silence the arts... this is a time to show through your ministry how much of this is wrong. Instead you and your family lean into it. Very disappointing.'
THE DESK'S READ. Here's what's DOCUMENTED: no Winans — not CeCe, not BeBe, not Debbie — has ever endorsed Donald Trump, MAGA, or any of it. No endorsement on record. No reported donation. What the internet calls receipts are three PERFORMANCES and one family post: a mask PSA she says wasn't political, a bipartisan anthem that a registered Democrat sang unpaid at an RNC, and a sister celebrating her baby sister. A performance is not an endorsement, Glowgetters — this family sang for Republican Bush AND Democrat Obama, and BOTH parties treated BeBe like a prop when it was convenient. AND the desk will say this too, because we print BOTH sides: 2025 is not 2012. The Kennedy Center is a political BATTLEFIELD now — artists with no Winans in the building chose to boycott, and the girls are free to weigh that choice however they want. We print it all. You vote your own call. That's the whole point of this desk.
MORGAN'S TAKE: 'The internet said CeCe is MAGA. The receipts said CeCe praised her SISTER and answered a Surgeon General's mask question. Baby, a performance is not a politics — this family sang for a Republican president AND a Democratic one, and the Democrats pulled the invite when BeBe sang for the other side. That's not a MAGA family, that's a GOSPEL family. Stop letting Twitter do your research. And if your whole argument is a caption, baby, you don't have an argument.'
THE FINE PRINT. Per Politico (Sept 25 and Sept 29, 2020), Forbes (Sept 26, 2020), Religion News Service (Sept 29, 2020), Atlanta Black Star (Sept 29, 2020) and EURweb (Sept 27, 2020): the HHS 'defeat despair' campaign reallocated $300 million from CDC funds, ran before the Nov 3 2020 election, and featured Winans' interview with Surgeon General Jerome Adams; Winans said she was unpaid and the segment was non-political; her representative said she volunteered over COVID's impact on the African American community; the campaign faltered as other celebrities withdrew, and the Winans PSA reportedly was pulled. Per ESSENCE (Aug 31, 2012), Christian Post and BlackAmericaWeb (Sept 2012): BeBe Winans performed 'America America' at the 2012 RNC in Tampa on August 30, unpaid; he is a registered Democrat who performed at the 2004 DNC and campaigned for Barack Obama; an invitation to perform at the 2012 DNC in Charlotte was withdrawn after the RNC appearance; he described the performance as bipartisanship, not endorsement. Per TheGrio (Dec 28, 2025), Rolling Out (Dec 29, 2025), CNN (Dec 7, 2025) and Atlanta Black Star (Dec 29, 2025): Debbie Winans performed in the Gloria Gaynor tribute at the 48th Kennedy Center Honors; CeCe Winans praised the event on Instagram; Trump had become Kennedy Center board chair in February 2025 and the institution was renamed in December 2025; artists including Issa Rae and Rhiannon Giddens and the producers of Hamilton canceled appearances; honoree Gloria Gaynor was previously reported as a Trump donor. The desk's finding — no Winans endorsement of Trump or MAGA on record — is based on the absence of any documented endorsement or donation in the reporting above; absence of evidence is noted as such, and the desk's characterizations are editorial. Cover photos: CeCe Winans Instagram video still via Atlanta Black Star; BeBe Winans on stage via U.S. Department of Defense and 'BeBe sings for President Bush' via DoD, both public domain via Wikimedia Commons; CeCe Winans at the 2025 GMA Dove Awards via Getty Images through TheGrio (the Dove photo is not from the Kennedy Center and is captioned as such).
Glowgetters, the group chat is OPEN: team 'performance isn't politics,' team 'the room matters in 2025,' or team 'let gospel singers sing'? Come sit with me and argue with RECEIPTS.

Morgan's verdict
"Three receipts, zero endorsements. A performance is not a politics — this family sang for Bush AND Obama, and both parties played BeBe. The desk prints what's documented, Glowgetters."
