Chris Rock Told On Himself: 'I Had The Means To Help Him. And I Didn't.'

Chris Rock Told On Himself: 'I Had The Means To Help Him. And I Didn't.'
Chris Rock in conversation with David Marchese. (Screen capture.)

Chyyyy... Chris Rock sat down with David Marchese before his new movie 'Misty Green' hits, and the clip everybody's passing around is the forgiveness one. Marchese asked him about forgiveness — public figures, who gets forgiven and why. And Chris... told on himself.

"When you're black, white people believe every accusation is a conviction." — Chris Rock, to David Marchese

THE STORY. Chris grew up between Howard and Saratoga — Bed-Stuy. He tells you to punch up Roger Logan, exonerated: one of his best friend's brothers, who went to jail for 19 YEARS for a murder he didn't commit. And here's the part that made my jaw tight: his friend used to PLEAD with him to pay for a lawyer for Roger. And Chris never did it.

"I had the means to help him. And I didn't. And I don't know if we could have got him out or not. But still." — Chris Rock

His reason, in his own words: "I always had like a no lawyer thing. 'Cause a lawyer is like an open ended thing. Like I'll pay your mortgage, I'll put whatever. I'll do all sorts of shit. I always stayed out of lawyers 'cause it's so open ended."

THE FORGIVENESS PART. He connected it to the system — Black men get accused of shit they didn't do all the time, every day in the paper. "We let black men out of jail. Whoops. That black guy just did 30 years. Too bad." He said the regret still fucks with him.

MORGAN'S TAKE. Now here's MY take, and I'ma keep it all the way real. It's no secret that in these Hollywood streets they've been saying Chris isn't for the Black community for a long time — so him saying he didn't want to put up the money for his best friend's brother's lawyer when Roger was WRONGLY ACCUSED? Honestly, that comes as no surprise to me. That's just what he does. He's not for the Black people. He's not for his community.

And let's be real, Chris: the reason you decided not to put up the money wasn't because lawyers are "open ended." It's because you didn't know what the outcome of the case would be, and you wanted to stay clear of the optics — because you couldn't afford to piss off the white executives, the entities, the studios in Hollywood. Let's call it what it is.

Couldn't pay me $1 million to devote that information. Maybe we already knew what some of us are just finding out.

THE FINE PRINT. The quotes are Chris's own words from the Marchese interview — he brought Roger Logan up HIMSELF, and the remorse on the tape is real too; I'm not taking that from him. The exoneration is public record. The rest? My opinion, and I said what I said.

Glowgetters, the group chat is OPEN at the bottom of this page: can you believe a man about the community when he had the means and didn't move? Come argue with me.

Morgan's verdict

"Roger Logan did 19 years for nothing. Chris Rock did one interview. Forgiveness is between a man and God — the lawyer money was between Chris and his friend, and we all heard which one he chose."
